What Skills Will I Learn

Physical Development
  • Begins to lose baby teeth
  • Walks backwards, toe to heal
  • Walks unassisted up and down stairs
  • Learns to skip using alternative feet
  • Catches a ball thrown from 3 feet away
  • Rides a tricycle with speed and skill
  • Reproduces many shapes and letters
  • Builds three-dimensional structures
  • Jumps or hops forward ten times in a row
  • Hand dominance is well established
  • Demonstrates fair control of pencil and marker
  • Balances on either foot with good control for ten seconds

Intellectual Development
  • Vocabulary of 1,500 words
  • Tells a familiar story while looking at pictures in a book
  • Defines simple words by function
  • Identifies and names eight colors
  • Produces sentences with 5 to 7 words
  • Recognizes the humor in simple jokes
  • Answers the telephone appropriately
  • Uses past-tense inflection correctly
  • Relates clock time to daily schedule
  • Identifies objects with specified serial position
  • Recognizes and identifies coins
  • Knows and understands the purpose of a calendar
  • Understands the concepts of smallest and shortest
  • Sorts objects so that all things in the group have a single common feature
  • Understands that the sequence of letters in a written word represent the sequence of sound
  • Makes predictions based on illustrations or portions of stories
  • Given a spoken word, able to identify another word that rhymes with it 
  • Demonstrates familiarity with numbers of genres of text (poems, storybooks, newspapers, etc.)

  • Enjoys and often has 1 or 2 focus friends
  • Plays cooperatively, is generous, takes turns and shares toys
  • Shows affection and caring
