What Skills Will I Learn?

Language Development

  • To develop listening skills through exposure to stories, literature and print.
  • To develop classroom discussions through circle time activities.
  • To develop the ability to recognize and write their names through the daily sign in sheets and name tags.
  • To develop the recognition of the alphabet through the use of “Hooked on Phonics”, Alligators to Zebra’s Literacy program and the Alphabet Stories Series.
  • To develop the ability to recite their phone number, address, age  and birthday through repetition.
  • To develop the ability to express feelings in words through feeling games and activities.
  • To develop many ways of writing, drawing and scribbling by using a wide variety of art media to include crayons, markers, paints, etc.

Math/Manipulative

  • To develop the recognition and counting of numbers from 1 to 20 through the use of number line counting and daily calendar, activities.
  • To develop the ability to match objects and numerals through the use of number bingo, counting bears and various number activities.
  • To develop the comparison of sizes and weights through the use of sorting games, science experiments and the Alligators and Zebra’s literacy game.

Social/Emotional Development

  • To develop socio-emotional skills through the exploration of feelings.
  • To develop socio-emotional skills through small group interaction.
  • To develop socio-emotional skills through responsibilities.
  • To develop socio-emotional skills through building self-concept.

Music and Movement

  • To develop moving in nonlocomotor ways through anchored movement such as twisting, rocking and swinging one’s arms.
  • To develop moving in locomotor ways such as running, jumping, hopping, skipping, marching and climbing.
  • To develop the ability to express creativity in movement through the use of various props and music.
  • To develop the ability to move in sequences to a common or steady beat through the use of different records and musical instruments.
  • To explore one’s singing voice through singing songs and listening to records.
  • To encourage the playing of simple instruments through the use of classroom music and musical instruments.

Initiative and Social Relations

  • To develop the ability to make and express choices, plans and decisions by allowing the child to make classroom decisions and choices in activities.
  • To develop problem solving activities encountered in play.
  • To develop the confidence to take care of one’s own needs.
  • To develop the ability to express feelings in words by role modeling and role playing.
