What Skills Will I learn?

Languages, Literacy Objectives and Communication

  • Talking with others about meaningful experiences through daily circle time discussions and classroom conversation.
  • Describing objects, events and relations through daily discussions, observations and books and classroom materials.
  • Reading in various ways: storybooks, making up stories and rhymes.
  • Holding a book right side up and turning the pages one at a time starting at the front of the book. Acting out various parts of the story as the teacher reads it, such as “Are You My Mother?”
  • Awareness of the written word through the labeling of familiar objects in the classroom and placing each child’s name in their seating place.
  • Listening skills by listening to stories read aloud, to other people’s conversation, to short familiar records and tapes, conversing with teachers and responding appropriately and by using words in dramatic play.
  • Writing in different ways: drawing, scribbling, letter like forms and invented spelling.
  • Following one and two step directions by giving specific instructions such as; “Please pick up the blue car and put it on the shelf.” Matching movement and actions to music through directions in songs. Following the teacher’s simple directions in class such as, “Find a book and take it to your table.”
  • Speaking in different ways through daily conversations using complete sentences, requesting information, the opportunity to describe recent events and answering questions about it.

Cognitive Development

  •  Mathematical processes will be introduced in the following ways: compare more or less, big and little, tall or short by pictures , books and by sorting through items in the classroom and discussing the numbers of eyes, ears or hands they have; having children hold up the number of fingers for their age and using number words in play.
  • Counting small sets of one, two or three objects with one-to-one correspondence. Learning to make sets up with the same different items and to make sets up to three by following directions for getting “just two pieces of paper” for drawing, by learning to recognize that they have the same number of blocks as their friend.
  • Developing counting skills by daily calendar activities, by having children count the number of cookies on the plate, reading and discussing counting books, singing counting songs and enjoying fingerplays about counting.
  • Awareness of shapes through daily activities involving shapes, weekly shape weeks, songs and books involving shapes. Learning to identify and label shapes in their environment. Learning to sort the wooden blocks and to place them correctly on the shelves.
  • Measuring activities will be introduced through classroom cooking activities. Pouring and filling activities will be reinforced through water table activities such as filling a big bottle and pouring into many small cups.

Social Emotional Development

  •  To develop socio-emotional skills through circle time discussions, role modeling, books and stories.
  • To develop socio-emotional skills by encouraging small group activities.
  • To develop socio-emotional skills by assigning duties and responsibilities to each child.

Music and Movement

  • To develop moving in nonlocomotor ways through anchored movement such as twisting, rocking and swinging one’s arms.
  • To develop moving in locomotor ways such as running, jumping, hopping, skipping, marching and climbing.
  • To develop awareness of different sounds and beats through the use of instruments and records.
  • To develop one’s singing voice through singing of songs and listening to records and tapes.
